Many people with depression can be treated by a general healthcare provider, but unfortunately in other cases there are many people who need more specialized treatment such as Prozac and Norpramin in order to help them control their chronic depression. There are many treatment options that can help to overcome depression. It is certainly true that there are many different factors that can contribute to depression as well as outset of a chemical imbalance. As an example, a death in the family can lead someone into major depression, also a stressful event such the death of a loved one, and also by having a family history of the disease, or even financial and health problems; all these symptoms can sadly be very good reasons for major depression. Prescription drugs can help someone overcome depression, however it should be only given to people who really need it.
As Greg Critser states, “We each have our own firing mechanism—some mysterious yet recognizable, bio-social moment that triggers the condition”.  That’s why people who have some of these symptoms should get help by getting the help they need with their prescription drugs. Experts think that depression occurs when something triggers a chemical imbalance in the brain. Many different factors can contribute to the outset of a chemical imbalance, such as long term use of certain medications, including some blood pressure drugs, and some drugs used to treat arthritis and Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore, having low self-esteem or being overly dependent, self-critical, or easily overwhelmed by stress, alcohol, nicotine, or even drug abuse, and physical abuse as well.

First of all, depression is a biological illness; it impacts your mood, mind, body, and behavior. It affects how you eat and sleep, how you feel about yourself, and how you relate to the world around you. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Depression goes beyond the normal ups and downs in mood we experience as we go through our daily lives. The most important thing to remember about depression is that it can be treated with the help of a health professional. There are three main types of depression; the first type of depression is “Major Depression” which usually occurs in episodes (periods lasting 6-12 months). Although individual episodes are treatable, most people can expect to have recurrences (new episodes) at some point. Symptoms of depression could be the following: Loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, feeling sad, blue, or down in the dumps, also feeling slowed down and having no energy or feeling restless and unable to sit still. Other symptoms are also feeling worthless or guilty, eating more or less than usual or gaining weight, most importantly, when people have problems focusing, thinking, remembering, and making decisions. Furthermore, not being able to sleep or sleeping too much, headaches, aches and pains, stomach problems, loss sex drive. Another symptom is having the feeling negative ness, hopeless, anxious, or worried, thoughts of death or suicide. As Greg Critser, states “Occasional suicidal ideation.” “Rarely cries- - yet looks depressed”. This person is more likely to be depressed based on the doctor diagnosis and as a result of doctor observations which is more likely showing one of the symptoms of major depression.

The second type of depression is “Dysthymia Depression” and this condition is like major depression, but it lasts longer and the symptoms are milder. People feel bad most of the time but can usually complete everyday tasks. Some symptoms of mania are feeling unusually “high” and energetic or usually irritable, needing less sleep. Another reason, is talking a lot or feeling like you can’t stop talking, racing thoughts, trouble concentrating, feeling of greatness, acting without thinking, doing dangerous things. The third type of depression is “Bipolar Disorder” (Manic Depression), this condition causes mood cycles. People cycle between episodes of mania (abnormal “highs”).

Cultivating Happier Relationships

                           CULTIVATING HAPPIER RELATIONSHIPS

By cultivating happier relationships you can encounter with new people and a happier way of living. Happiness in relationships can bring joy and much  more fun into your life, love also contributes to have a happier relationship. Family and real love plays the most important role in cultivating a happier and healthier relationship. “Many people believe that the key to a successful relationship is finding the  right  partner” (Ben-Shahar 120). Cultivating good and happier relationships consists on spending quality time with your family and friends as much as possible.

Relationships can bring you many happy moments to your life but it can also bring you sad moments as well. Love can bring you happiness too, when you are in love that is the best feeling ever is like you have the whole world all for you and you only. Cultivating relationships allows you to interact more with your family and friends but it also gives you the opportunity of meeting new people.  Ed Diener and  Martin Seligman says “Having people about whom we care and who care about us to share our lives with--to share the events and thoughts and feelings in our lives--intensifies our experience of meaning, consoles us in our pain, deepens our sense of delight in the world” (gtd. in Ben-Shahar 111). Love and respect is  part of the ingredients for a happy relationship, the meaning of love is  when you have that special person who is part of your life the one you cannot stop thinking of all day,  is also when you are willing to give  what you don't have for only that one person who took over your whole existence. When we fall in love we tend to loose control because our mind and body are going through a new cycle where we only care and think about that person that we are in love with. There is also unconditional love  is the foundation  of a happier relationship which gives you love  but not spec ting nothing in return from that person in another words is like loving someone under no conditions and that is actually what makes you happy. “We are taught that falling in love with someone is about following  our heart, not our mind ---that love, by definition, is inexplicable, mystical, beyond reason” (Ben-Shahar 113). Satisfaction and attraction can also be confused thinking that what you feel for a person is love when in reality is not, this  is more likely to happen when you often see someone and it caught your attention but maybe is just because you like the  way that person dresses up or because you admire the way that person handle themselves in certain situations.

Quality time means when you and your love ones and friends  spend time together in a good and healthy environment like in a nice park around your community  in which you can enjoy nature and enjoy each other like real family among with friends. Love requires sacrifices and endurance in order to grow strong and be able to stay together forever loving each other. “Even within a relationship in which partners love each other and want to be together, happiness can be undermined by the belief  that sacrifice is a synonymous with love---that the greater the sacrifice, the deeper the love” (Ben-Shahar 117). There are many things you can do to have with your family in a park, as an example, you can make a nice beautiful picnic where everybody can enjoy themselves. Kids can play in the park such as riding their bike which is a great exercise that helps you free your mind and spirit in order words exercising is the best workout when you to the park; the kids could run all over back and forth just the way they love to play and run by letting the fresh air through their body when their body temperature is very high. Moreover kids can play different sports such as volleyball, basketball, handball and also to the swimming pool while the family is interacting with each other and also getting to know new people in the area.

The family usually get together to talk about old times and good memories they also talk about sad memories as well because is part of every human being. As Ed Diener and  Martin Seligman says “Spending meaningful time with friends, family, or romantic partners was necessary (though not by itself sufficient ) for happiness” (gtd. in Ben-Shahar111). Relationships between family members can be very interesting and specially in a picnic at a nice park which can be a very efficient source of entertainment for the family and friends as well; this is the perfect place where you can interact with the community: their neighbors, their friends from school, their colleagues from work or from college. Another thing you can do when you go to the park is to reminisce on your childhood with your family, discuss all the things each one of them used to do as a child many years ago, I believe that this moments are worthless because is real quality time with your family and you are building a very strong bond with each other. A family reunion, where you all meet up and have a good time talking or dancing with the rhythm of some nice music, for example, spanish music; bachata, merengue, salsa, regueton and all kind of music.

Finally, I can say that my family is very important to me as  well as my lovely husband. By cultivating happier relationships we can accomplish a brighter future, by being able to  spend time with our family members and with our love ones as well as with friends. Love and perseverance  can  cultivate a happy and long lasting relationship.

HAPPINNESS AT WORK

DIORIS REYES                                                                                   10/25/10
   ENG 101

                                          "HAPPINNESS AT WORK"

You can gain happiness when you really enjoy what you do at work. Many events in an individuals life can have a very significant effect in the way they end up as a person, events of great inspiration, or even periods of desperation. Joy, disappointment, but mostly learning experiences can shape one's life in ways that might have changed the course of their future and made them who they are today.

My life has been a very work-oriented one; most of my life my "occupation" has been receiving my education. However, I have been working most of the time even when I'm still attending school; my current job has had a certain effect on me. My job has molded me into someone different, someone who has learned how to become more responsible. The great thing that my job has and the reason why I enjoy it so much is thus it gives me the opportunity to be able to fly for free. Even though, my job could be very stressful, tiring and mentally esausting. Over three years ago I was giving the job as a customer service agent for US Airways Express at La Guardia Airport; and very proud to say that this job had satisfy my expectations. I consider myself multi-tasking, very tolerant to many different attitudes, problem solving and have a lot of patience; In addition I'm also a very affable person who loves to interact with others; meeting new people and having the opportunity to share our interests, and points of view. Working for an airline can be very irritating, you need to be able to work and function under stress and pressure, delays and opposition. I personally love to excel in adversity situations in which allows me to assist others; as a customer service agent at US Airways Express I have faced many situations every single day.

My biggest responsibility is to maintain our reputation in customer satisfaction at all times; in order to be competitive with other airlines and our legacy counter parts, as a employee it is my duty to keep our reputation of on-time performance and reliable baggage delivery. Mostly important, is to have a good and fun working environment at your job because to me my job is my second home in which I spend most of my time other than home; I have a different environment at my job everyday thus you don't see the same people all the time. Another reason, why I'm very happy at work is because I'm able to be who I am consistently friendly, outgoing, and helpful very smart too. When you are always happy and enjoying life it is contagious and that's a fact; as Robert M. Pirsig writes, "Happiness is not merely contingent on what we do or where we are but on what we choose to perceive." My satisfaction is granted when I see my customers happy and enjoying while they are waiting in the boarding area for their flight, therefore when I'm working a flight I like to provide my customers with accurate and precise information so they will feel welcome and appreciated for their business.

My main task for me when I go to work everyday is to provide outstanding customer service in a potentially difficult situation such as the following. For instance, this is a regular business day for me in US Airways Express at La Guardia Airport. Furthermore, in this particular day we were having bad weather conditions coming towards the area of New York later on that day and unfortunately we are unable to control "mother nature", so we were having a lot of delays due to weather conditions. While I was standing at my podium doing my job and making sure everything was under control; I was filling all the paper work for the flight that I had recently boarded and closed. Few minutes later a customer approached my podium in a very irritating mood thus he was just advised that he had missed his connecting flight out La Guardia due to his late arrival at the airport because the flight that he was on got delay do to weather and heavy air traffic. By the time he arrived at my gate it was too late his flight was closed already; after I addressed him the situation and reasons for his flight he started acting very aggressive towards myself. Immediately I put myself in his shoes at that moment so I listed to what he needs to say, then few minutes later he said to me "I came straight here for my connecting flight. Why didn't you hold the flight?" First, "I apologize for any inconveniences may cause to you ", and acknowledge the person with attentive and open body language; allowing me to empathize with the customer by saying the following, "This is obviously a huge inconvenience to you". Let's see what flights we have available and rebook you to your final destinations". Afterwards he apologize for his aggressive manners towards myself, he felt very frustrated at the time.

Finally, working on what you love to do is the best thing that can happen to someone, even though that having a job requires a very high level of responsibilities. I'm very satisfied and happy with my job which had offered me the opportunity to do what I most enjoy and that's to fly all over visiting new places. Through the time I have learned to suppress my own temper with time and patience, but the most important I stay happy and stress free at my job.

HAPPINNESS AND MONEY

DIORIS REYES

HAPPINESS AND MONEY

Happiness can be granted with money but it will not last forever, but money can contribute to give you an illusion of happiness.Money can satisfy your needs but it will not bring you real happiness. Many people don’t know the real meaning of happiness because they never had the opportunity to have real happiness; people think about money as the main thing in order to be happy. Money can satisfy your needs such as getting things that you like which you might not even need at the time. It is sad to see that people waste their money just to pleased their satisfaction of the moment and because they have the money to spend it they will buy whatever they want.

In your moment of happiness you don’t realize that you are not real happy that is only for that moment but in your conscious mind you know you are not having real happiness. As Aristotle says "Happiness is the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence". I believe this is true because our main purpose in life is to be happy and to keep others who are around us happy as well; if we are happy because you have the privilege of being alive. Also, only by having the freedom to use all your body parts and strength, to be able to work and do all the physical activities by yourself is more than enough to feel thankful and very happy.

Money is just a source that is capable to help us survive because we all have bills, responsibilities and many other problems that it needs to be paid off so all that requires money. Some people do have the money to get all the things they need and they consider themselves being happy, in contrast, to people who don't have the money to satisfy those needs but still they are happier than the ones who do have the money. Unfortunately, sometimes money is not always the perfect solution to our problems in life; in addition, money might give problems instead of giving you peace and solutions. For instance, happy people with less money experiences more of cold states during their human existence because they are more likely to be thoughtful, very calm and relax in difficult moments. However, people who have plenty of money to spend on anything have a much higher percentage on having more hot states during their life time because they tend to act first think later and that's when money play its role. Each state has its consequences it is a result of letting your emotions controlled you and pocket when you feel that you have the control over your money.

Money is an opportunity for happiness, but money does not guarantee happiness forever. Having the money to do and buy what ever you want it gives you power and that is what makes you happy. What money also makes you feel happy because if you have plenty of money you don't need to worry about at the balance on your bank account at the end of each month, when you know that it needs to be at a certain amount so it will cover your bills and have enough to prevent late fees which eventually you can not afford. When you have money to buy and do whatever you want, and, you might think you have everything you need but in reality is not true because you can lose everything in a blink of an eye so therefore money can give you the illusion of happiness but is not the real. It is different when you are happy because you have achieve something in life that you always dream with all your childhood; that is real happiness that no one can't take that away from you.

As Spike Milligan says, "Money can't buy you happiness but it does bring you a more form of misery". Yes it is true it does bring you problems and more problems if you don't have the ability to manage your money in a proper manner. When you have money to spend it on something you want, such as travelling you can do it and all; but you have to keep in mind what might happen tomorrow after you spend all your money on vacation and going to trips and having lots of fun. That’s the problem people don’t see when they have the money on their hands thinking that it will never go away from them, they are happy while they have the money and without the money they become miserable because they don’t know how to live without any money . Happiness is the most important thing of our lives that gives us the energy to keep on in life and make something better of ourselves. From my personal experience happiness is best thing you can ever experience in your life and more important is to learn how to live happy peacefully and not with a lot money but enough to survive, I am a very happy person and I am not rich but I have enough money to live and have a happy life with my family. My life is not about money is about to stay happy and enjoy all god had gave me.

Finally, money is not all you need to be happy in life; money comes and goes at all times. Our society don't need to be rich in order to be happy. LOVE and enough money but not too much so you can be the "Happiest". Money does not guarantee love that is for sure. Is it true that money brings you love?
